Edison Criminal & DWI Attorneys
Although Edison has received many accolades as one of the more livable communities in the United States, this does not mean it is immune to criminal, DWI and traffic offenses. This is only to be expected as the highest populated municipality in Middlesex County and the fifth most in New Jersey. With so many people and over 30 square miles within the township, the 171 or so officers employed by the Edison Police Department encounter a wide array of violations. The same can also be said, however, by the former prosecutors and skilled criminal attorneys at our firm who comprise one of the largest defense teams in the state. If you were arrested for an assault, drug, DWI/DUI or theft offense in Edison Township, we possess the skills and experience, including over 100 years defending both basic and complex charges, to succeed on your behalf.
The initial aftermath of an arrest can be confusing and intimidating. The primary concern is typically the penalties and consequences that will be faced in the event of conviction. What we can tell you, assuming this is your concern, is that you will have a record if you are found guilty of any criminal charge and will lose your license if you are convicted of DWI. The variety of criminal charge heard in Edison Municipal Court is referred to as a disorderly persons offense. Although this grade of offense is the lowest set forth in the New Jersey Criminal Code, it nevertheless can result in up to six months in the county jail, significant fines, probation, community service, drug testing and suspension of your driver’s license. A DUI also carries serious penalties if you are convicted including a revocation of your privilege to drive, thousands of dollars in surcharges, skyrocketing insurance rates, and the possibility of incarceration, especially if it is your second, or third offense. Our attorneys regularly appear in Edison Township Municipal Court and, more importantly, have a high rate of success in avoiding penalties like these. In fact, we are able to escape a conviction altogether for disorderly persons offenses and are probably more successful than you might believe in DWI cases.
Felony offenses are graded in terms of severity in New Jersey by “degree.” Fourth degree crimes are the least serious indictable felonies and first degree crimes are the most severe. Any criminal charge of this nature falls outside the jurisdiction of Edison Municipal Court. The result is that all proceedings in these types of cases are heard the Middlesex County Superior Court in New Brunswick with the exception of an initial arraignment in the municipal court. Our firm is a longtime player in this arena and has handled literally thousands of indictable offenses over the years. We even maintain an law office on Paterson Street directly across from the County Courthouse to better service our clients who are facing Superior Court charges.
Criminal cases can be complicated and the stakes high. Many of the same considerations apply to DWI violations. This is not a realm for the inexperienced. So do your research wisely and dig deep to figure out what you are really considering. Is the attorney you are reading about someone who has been doing this work for decades or is this someone who is twisting words to throw you off from the fact that they have limited experience. Concerns like these are nonexistent with our firm. We can offer you a defense firm of both a size and level of experience that few in the state, let alone Middlesex County, can parallel.
